It may be only a few more weeks until a grocery store is once again part of the downtown Downers Grove landscape.

The finishing touches are being put on Lemon Tree Grocer, a 5,875-square-foot food market to be located at 5101 Mochel Drive.

A soft opening is planned, to be followed by a more splashy grand opening, said Tim Canning, one of the store’s operators.

“We’re looking at the beginning of July,” said Canning, who is partnering with produce broker Shaun Black and Michael’s Fresh Market’s parent company.

Canning, a longtime chef, said Lemon Tree will feature a barista serving fresh-roasted coffee beginning at 5 a.m. weekdays, breakfast pastries and a variety of ready-to-go foods.

“There’ll be grab-and-go lunches, cut fruits, yogurts, a lot of organics and local produce,” he said.

The store also will feature a deli, bakery, fresh seafood counter, sampling stations, wine tastings and fresh-cut flowers.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The last grocery store to operate in downtown Downers Grove closed about six years ago.

Linda Kunze, manager of the Downtown Downers Grove Management Corporation, said counters and refrigerated cases have been installed and work on the store’s interior is progressing in preparation for a summer opening.

“We’ve been waiting,” she said. “It’s going to be absolutely so fun.”
